A reminder that this Saturday we have the July edition of the Monthly Craft Market as previewed on an earlier post here, with info on all the lovely things in the local area to make it a proper day out.

It’s the last of these markets I will be doing this summer (but there is another August Bank Holiday), so take this chance to come by and say hello, and sample the free cocktails (must remember the home made elderflower champagne) lovely home made cakes and see lots of lovely hand made fare.

Not only will we be at the Monthly Craft Market, but we’re also joining my sister for her summer open studio’s in Pullens Yards in Kennington here. Lots of very talented people will be opening their doors in the lovely cobbled yards, plus there will be entertainment and food and drink on offer. It’s on over three days, and although we won’t be there in person on the Saturday, our things will be, and we’ll be there Friday evening and Sunday.

So we have the North and South covered this weekend, and we’re always East Thursdays and Fridays at Spitalfields…… Catch us when you can!

Duxford 11th July

July 12, 2009 · 2 Comments

Yesterday was a trip to the Duxford Flying Legends Airshow, a show featuring classic American and European aircraft such as the Hurricane, Mustang and Spitfire. A visit prompted by my family as a 70th birthday treat for my father, who is an avid lover of aeroplanes.
As a child I accompanied him to many airshows, at first loving the stalls selling bits and bobs, and home made cake in air hangers (very different to what you get today) then as a teenager my interest being taken more by the handsome Danish pilots.

Camp building

And somehow that influence seeps into the pores. It became obvious yesterday as the excitement mounted setting eyes on the camp buildings, Nissan huts, little wooden offices, the officers mess and even the lovely old proper canvas tents. The more my eyes lit up at the textures, materials, graphics and structures which express beautifully a functional approach, but at the same time a very hands on and highly crafted execution in the days long before computers, it became obvious where my influences (and colour palette) have come from. Why I love the colours I do, and the buildings I do.

The aeroplanes lined up against the backdrop of the Cambridgeshire countryside looked at home in the landscape, the colour and camouflage working with the environment, very similar to the Lincolnshire landscape I grew up with it’s aviation history and many airfields and bunkers where we used to play as children.

I’ve been meaning to visit the Norman Foster hanger that houses the American collection for some time, this little beauty was my favourite:

I loved Duxford and I shall definitely be back for more inspiration, now if only I could have one of their buildings for a studio, the pre-fab perhaps?……….

And for more expert photo’s of the beautiful planes in the air have a look here.

The Best Coffee In Spitalfields

June 21, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Market Coffee House

Not normally a coffee lover, this place almost has me converted form my beloved tea.
It simply tastes as good as the coffee in Italy.
So thirsty visitors passing by my stall at Spitalfields get directed there, not least because they do the most amazing cakes. And what with the extended seating area it makes a very cosy place to rest your weary feet.

19.    The Bag – by Circa, much loved and battered.

I am posting the contents of my handbag after reading Belgian Waffling’s handbag shame revisited, (via Westendmum) and and being reminded of a project I used to do with Art Foundation students many moons ago which used the same premise as the starting point to make work from.

I also love it when Danny Baker does his Kitchen Drawer phone in, getting people to read out exactly what is in their kitchen drawer. This is the kind of anthropological digging I am fascinated by, and it is interesting to see what people choose to carry about their person.

I note from my own contents that there is not one scrap of make up in my bag, but there are 7 pine cones…. I am always impressed by women who whip out a whole tool kit of the kind of make up found in department store beauty departments, but I know alas, that will never be me………..

De La Warr Pavillion

June 8, 2009 · 1 Comment

De La Warr Pavillion, originally uploaded by Edwyn UK.

They told us the weather would be awful but just look at that blue sky.

The perfect time to head to the coast is when everyone thinks the weather will be horrid and therefore literally leaves the coast clear for the rest of us crowd shy folk to enjoy ourselves.

So via a visit to newly moved friends we managed to squeeze in a trip to the glorious De La Warr Pavillion in the oh so English seaside town Bexhill-on-Sea.

We arrived fairly late in the afternoon, so agreed to save the ice cream until after we’d seen the exhibition Seascape by Susan Collins.
Oh dear, we got out at 5.10pm, and the seafront refreshments had all shut up shop.
I was transported back to my childhood in Lincolnshire where everything stopped at 5 and by rights you should be sat at the dinner table eating your tea, as we called it. And I imagined that that was exactly what was happening in every household in Bexhill right there and then, via the fish and chip shop which was experiencing the most activity in the near vicinity!

So, visit Bexhill and the Pavillion, but make sure you get your ice cream before 5!

Edwyn sits

Edwyn sits, originally uploaded by Edwyn UK.

I have realised this blog’s namesake has yet to have a proper look in on the photographic side. I don’t really want to inundate the blog with dog photo’s (we have flickr for that) but I think I must share this sitting photo.

I just love the way these terriers sit with their legs sticking out. And here Edwyn is, sat nicely watching football on a picnic rug in Battersea Park. Ahhhhh. It’s a tough life.
